Headshot Preparation

How can I prepare for a great headshot session?

Headshot Preparation

How can I prepare for a great headshot session?

HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR HEADSHOT SESSION

Well, just like that epic song from Disney's The Lion King says, you need to BE PREPARED to make sure you get the best possible experience for your photo shoot. Please read the headshot preparation tips below and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to email me!

I am looking forward to working with and shooting ya!

10 TIPS TO PREPARE FOR YOUR HEADSHOT SESSION

Be prepared. (Sensing a theme yet?)

I want to provide my clients with a range of looks so they have great content for print & online use. If you take ownership of this session by already thinking about what you want you will get much better final products!

1)     Know who you are.

Think about what words/characters best represent/describe who you are and what you want casting directors to think about you. Having specific thoughts in mind when you show up will shorten any warm up periods in front of the camera and help us to spend more time shooting fabulous looks for you! Please make sure you check in with your representation (agent, manager, acting coach, whoever has a professional industry opinion you trust) to help clarify how you should be marketing yourself to the acting industry. We don't want to do an entire shoot if they won't like it and demand you re-shoot; so again prepare and come to your session knowing what you need to move forward in your career!

2)     Know what you want.

I will of course help guide you to discover your inner brilliance, but you should already show up to the shoot knowing whether or not you need theatrical, commercial, character shots, studio or natural light, and any specific looks you may be after. Again, please refer to tip #1 and check in with your representation to make sure you are scheduling to get the right kinds of headshots. For you newbies out there who may not know what the difference is, or don't have any professional representation yet, I'd love to offer my two cents on the matter and will gladly help you get started in the right direction! We will talk before the session to make sure you are getting the products you need, but if you chat up your Agent/Manager/colleagues first you will be a step or two ahead of the game!

3)     Get some sleep!

It will be very obvious in your headshots if you were out late the night before. You want to avoid needing every single one of your images needing extensive retouching as it will be very expensive, so come rested. Seriously, red eyes from partying last night look TERRIBLE. It is very noticeable in your photos and to be honest not very appealing unless every character your are submitting for is the drugged/drunk person...and even then it will look unprofessional, so: Rest up!

On that note:

4)     HIRE A MAKEUP ARTIST!

Makeup is your best friend on camera. . .unless you over do it. I have a list of several makeup/hair artists you may contact to hire (you will pay them separately as these fees are not included in my session fees). I STRONGLY recommend you hire one of them as they all are amazing and know exactly what to do to create stunning looks for both men and women when shooting with professional lighting. If we are shooting outdoors it will be especially helpful to have a makeup artist who is explicitly looking to take care of any shine, flyaway hair, etc.

If you choose to do your own hair & makeup then: For women I would prefer if you arrived with a more natural look (simple foundation, no eye shadow) and then we can move into fancier style if you’d like. We want your skin looking radiant so I leave it to you to find the best/smoothest foundation, etc. Stay away from sparkly powders and the like. Remember for actor headshots "Less is Best" usually applies.

**Casting Directors want your headshot to look like you on a normal day.**

Don't go crazy! No fake eyelashes (unless of course you are Zooey Deschanel!).

*Doing your own makeup and hair can be very distracting and pull your focus from creating great character and personality on camera; so again I strongly recommend hiring a makeup artist. It is much better, and more fun if you can relax and focus on being a professional actor on your headshot shoot day than to play makeup artist and hair extraordinaire!

5)     BEFORE THE SHOOT: Don't Change your hair.

This one is pretty simple: plan your haircuts, dye jobs, etc. a few weeks before your shoot, not the night before. You want to look natural and not freshly sheared or colored. Remember, the golden rule is your headshots need to look like you and look natural!

6)     DURING THE SHOOT: STYLE your hair DIFFERENT for every look.

The reason I suggest you do this is to help create more versatility in your headshot session. While you will usually submit for roles with only one headshot, other online sites like IMDB, LA Casting, Actors Access, your personal website, etc. will have the option to show several photos of you and it can be a great benefit to show as many sides of you as possible!

For guys this may or may not be an option depending on the mop status you're rocking, but for both men and women I suggest:

Start simple, then get fancy.

Depending on what ya got to work with, starting natural and then going straight/curly is a good way to go. Guys you should know if you want a look without product, if that is the case, let’s start with that look. This way we don't have to wait for hair to dry if you wash stuff out. Also, speaking of hair, I am cool for the guys if you want to start with a beard and then shave later for a different look (please note that will count as a separate look in the pricing).

7)     Wear what you are comfortable in!

Picking wardrobe for headshot sessions can be a grueling task. Whether you are waging war through your closet or trekking out to the mall, the best rule to keep in mind is to find something that makes you feel confident, awesome, sexy, fun, and relaxed! I suggest bringing 7-10 outfits (or more) so we have plenty of options to choose from. Remember for "traditional" headshots: less is best (in terms of detail/pattern), however patterns are cool with me if they can help portray who you are and your personality. You are the client and outfit choice is up to you and what you are using the images for. I would stay away from any writing though, and anything that would distract to heavily from your face. When in doubt: bring it, bring other options, we’ll figure it out when you get here!

8)     Don't settle for only what is in your closet.

Many, many, many actors go out and buy an outfit(s) specifically for a headshot shoot and then return them after. I will not judge if you show up with tags still attached to shirts, and encourage you to find a great look for yourself that makes you feel comfortable and confident! Leave the tags on and no one will be the wiser when looking at your shots; who knows you may end up falling in love with a few outfits and decide to upgrade!

9)     Schedule some wiggle room.

Make sure you have some spare time on the day you book your shoot. If you are planning the busiest week alive, it may not be the best time to schedule your headshot session. If you show up the day of the shoot and you didn't have time to prepare or are running late, your mind will be all over the place and it will be very difficult to focus on your headshot session. Seeing as your headshot is usually your first gateway into a job, you need to make it a priority and take the time for yourself to prepare. Also on the day of the shoot plan for a little extra time as well! My sessions usually range anywhere from 3-4 hours depending on which headshot package you are getting. I want to make sure you get the looks you need and if we decide a few extra minutes is needed to accomplish that, then I’d like to take the time to have you leave the studio happy!

10)  HAVE FUN!

You having fun means you are relaxed. You being relaxed means we are getting great shots that are not only really connecting to the camera, but to the agents and casting directors who will be looking at your headshot! I love to have music blasting during my shoots. If you have any preferences let me know! If you want to bring a friend or entourage to make sure you stay relaxed then do it! The more the merrier!

I will have bottled water, coffee, snacks, a comfy couch, and two very eager for attention dogs at the studio waiting for you to help keep you upbeat and ready to rock your photo shoot! (Also, make sure to let me know if you are allergic to dogs).
